MAKE UP AS A CAREER

Makeup as a Career

Makeup artists work in the fashion and media industries, creating looks for models, presenters and performers. They may work on the makeup for actors for movies, television, theatre, photo shoots and concerts. A makeup artist will listen to the needs of their clients and work to create a certain look, taking into consideration lighting, wardrobe and the person's natural features (hair, skin color and facial shape). Once an artist has been working with a client for a while, they may know what to do for them without any direction. As a beauty makeup artist, you will experience an array of responsibilities, from advice, to product recommendations, to giving makeup tips. It will be essential for you to know the various application techniques and how to use different types of makeup. Not everyone will look good in all colors and you will need to know how to effectively determine which colors work and which ones to stay away from. It is hard to say how much money you can earn as a makeup artist, because it depends on how many jobs you book, what you charge and how far you push yourself.

If you work in a salaried position, you can expect to make typically between $27,000 and $35,000 per year. If you work in television and film, you can make upwards of $90,000 per year. Makeup artists that work with celebrities, on fashion shows and for large cosmetic brands, can make over $100,000 per year. First and second years of career panning: Work as an assistant makeup artist with a mentor; gain the knowledge and skills. You will have access to product lines, techniques and clients. Take some side jobs to start making it happen for yourself. Third to fifth years: Start to branch off on your own; build your own clientele, reputation and business. Hopefully you will have built up a portfolio and know how to deal with clients. You can still work with your mentor, but the focus needs to turn to developing your own name in the industry. Sixth to eighth years: Your client list has likely expanded; now it is time to instill your brand and start mentoring your own assistants.Nine Plus Years: Try to work with a cosmetics brand or in the implementation of new services. Open up a salon and offer various services, besides just makeup. Become a consultant and help people find their perfect look. You are a master of your skill now and you should be able to continue to grow your brand and increase your business.

Working conditions always change in this business. You may set up a booth in a salon, go to the hotel room of your client, go to their home, be on a studio set, or travel to a foreign location. The idea is you go where your client needs you to go. Make sure that you network wherever you go. Building better relationships and meeting new people helps to build up your client list. On entertainment jobs you may be working with a stylist, to make sure the colors work with the wardrobe. You may have to switch looks quickly, to get the person ready for a new scene or song. You may need to read a script and sketch out a few designs, to appease the director. They will have a vision for their stars and it will be your job to fulfill it. A scene may take place in a different time period and you will have to research how they wore makeup back then. Sometimes you have to know the character, time period and wardrobe to be able to create a look that is perfect for a particular job. Be ready for working irregular hours in the Media industry. You may have to work long hours for several months straight and there may be several months where you are without work. When working, it is normal for the makeup artist to stay throughout the filming process, to touch up the makeup or change it for various scenes. You may also need to stay until the end of shooting, to properly remove the makeup.
